Officership in the Army.-1
Offifership in Defence services is an unique oppurtunity for youth to serve the country
and display leadership qualities.Out of all uniformed services Army is cosidered to be the best.
For a country like India the Army service provides great oppurtunities to serve along the
length and breadth of the country. We have wide spread land enclosed on three sides by sea
and in the north the highest mountain range of the world.We have plains of Punjab,Deserts of
Rajasthan,Mountain and glaziers of Himalayas,jungles of North East.
The Army is a multy faceted organisation which gives ample oppurtunities to develop all the faculties
os a human being.The two major divisions of Army personnel are Officers,and Other ranks.
This category is called Personnel Below Officer Ranks (PBOR ).
The Army also has Arms and services branches providing very active and adventurous life for
those interested and nomal civilian type life who likes easy going.
In this scenario,Ganesan accidently entered Army.But after entering the officer catagory,
Ganesan came to know that even amongst officers,there is discrimination based on the source of entry.
Rashtriya Indian Military College,only one in the country and located at Masoori is considered
to be high in the order of merit.Military schools,Sainik Schools,Army public schools and
English medium convents are other institutions from where military officership may emerge.
All these institutions basicaly prepare boys for +2 level education.From here those who are
interested in Defence services write UPSC examination to get entry into National Defense Acadamy(NDA )
NDA is the first combined training institution for Army,Airforce and Navy entry officers.
After three years training here the successful students go to repective Acadamy for further
Training and on completion of which they get President's Commission.
NDA entry scheme has got strict age and time schedule.Those who do not make it for NDA
can pursue any graduate course and write Combined Defence Services examination conducted
by UPSC and join those coming out of NDA.
Other than these two types of Officer entry,there is Tech graduate entry,Army cadat course entry.
Special list entry.Inspite of such wide open entry scheme for military officers,there are about
12,000 vacancies exists in the Army.Under these circumstances if National emergency is declared
due to external threat ,then Emergency Commission is revoked.State and central Govt employs who
are in eligible age and education limits are pursuaded to join the Army and strengthern the Nation.
Ganesan was an Engineering superviser in PWD in 1962.The Chineese attack in Oct-Nov 1962 caused
National emergency and Ganesan joined as Emergency Commissioned Officer.when the emergency was
lifted in 1969,Ganesan was given the option either to continue or return to PWD.If he opted for
continuing then he was asked to undergo another services selection board.Ganesan opted for permanent
commission and got selected.He was sent for 3 year B.Tech course at the college of military
engineering and on completion he stood college First.
Now Ganesan is fully armed to fight the battle of survival both with in and outside the Army.
